When it was announced several years ago that the former Bay department store building on 2nd Avenue would be converted into condos I had thought this might mean the disappearance of the colourful mosaic found on the building's corner at 23rd street and 2nd Avenue. Fortunately those behind the project kept the 1960s design. The Bay continues to have a presence in Saskatoon, currently occupying what had been the home of Eaton's department store in Midtown Plaza before that chain's demise.

Not What She Expected.

I was at the Saskatoon Public Library today to hear the Lee Kozak Trio perform a set of jazz oriented improvised music in conjunction with an art exhibit currently showing in the second floor art gallery, a series of portraits painted by artist Karen Holden. This senior citizen was amongst the crowd. I'm sure the sometimes aggressive nature of the music created wasn't quite what she was expecting, but to her credit she stayed for most of the performance. She also told one of the library staff that they should have more musical performances. Another woman she talked to certainly didn't know what kind of music would be played. The second woman asked where the vocal trio was, to which the first woman replied that the second most certainly had heard wrong, as no vocal trio was scheduled.

I liked the music guitarist Kozak, keyboardist Bill Stephanson, and drummer Duane Dorgan did, especially the third piece they created. Below you'll find a shot of some of the other members of the audience today.

Evil on 8th Street.

I spotted this sticker a while ago on 8th Street on a traffic light pole. It's MODOK, who has been troubling the world of Marvel Comics since the 1960s. The Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing was originally a scientist of the scientific criminal organisation AIM before he was chosen to be mutated into his current form. Unfortunately for those involved they succeeded far beyond their own expectations, and MODOK soon took over AIM with the dangerous psychic powers he gained. It should be noted that MODOK normally travels about in a hoverchair, so he would have little use for a button to activate pedestrian walk lights

"I'm the operator..."

"...with my pocket camera," to paraphrase Kraftwerk.

Welcome to Saskatoon At 7 Megapixels. The idea is a simple one, to present photos I've taken of Saskatoon. I won't claim to be anything better than a mediocre photographer, but hopefully I'll improve a bit as time passes. I'll be posting photos in no particular order, so some will be recent while others may be quite old.

As for the photo above that is of course me with the camera used for this blog, a Kodak Easyshare C713. Not the world's most advanced digital camera, but suitable for my purposes. This is to the best of my knowledge the only photo of me online, and is the best you're likely to get. You won't be getting a chance to see my face on here.
