Poker Face(Reminder).

face

This sign would have caught my attention anyways since it's currently posted on multiple doors at the Centre at Circle and 8th shopping mall.  But added to this is the fact she reminds me of British media personality and poker player Vicky Coren.  I would imagine however that Coren is a little too busy to be doing promo photos for Canadian shopping malls.

Battlesigns.

in competitiion

A line of political campaign signs in Sidney L. Buckwold Park on McKercher Drive, representing Brad Trost of the Conservative Party and Darren Hill of the Liberal Party.  Interestingly I haven't run across signs from Denise Kouri of the NDP on public property like these.

The late Sid Buckwold was twice Mayor of Saskatoon(1958-1963, 1967-1971) and served as Liberal Senator for Saskatchewan between 1971 and 1991.

Lonely.

green sign

As is always the case in a federal election lawn signs soon become a regular sight.  But some parties have more signs than others.  This Green Party sign is the only one I've run across so far in my riding, Saskatoon-Humboldt.  NDP candidate Denise Kouri seems to have the most signs so far.

Disobeying.

don't smoke

Various city run facilities are zoned as no smoking, including Saskatoon Transit bus shelters.

don't smoke 2

However it's probably not a surprise that such prohibitions are often ignored.

All Day, And All Of The Night.

sobeys

This is a shot of the Preston Crossing Sobeys store.  The sign indicates that like the other Saskatoon stores of the chain this location is now open 24 hours a day.  I'm skeptical of any of them getting much business at 3 in the morning, but the Preston Crossing location seems especially unlikely to given its isolation.  No one is likely to drive past the store and stop in on impulse.  Still, Sobeys decision to go 24 hours is an example of the slowly expanding number of 24 hour businesses in Saskatoon, such as a couple of outlets of Shoppers Drug Mart and the drive through windows at McDonalds.

Secret Agent?

joe 90

Joe 90's Auto Sales has been located at 8th St. and Louise Avenue for several years.  I wonder if other Saskatonians besides me recognise a more famous use of this name.  Joe 90 was a 1968 Gerry Anderson production about a 9 year old boy who, via a special pair of glasses, could perform any skill programmed into them at an expert level, and used this ability as a secret agent.  This was the last of Anderson's series to primarily use "Supermarionation," Anderson's trademarked term for highly sophisticated marionettes, and used in previous series such as the cult classic Thunderbirds.

You Can't Miss 'Em.

With the change of seasons came a new Midtown Plaza ad campaign.  Continuing on the "Fashion First" theme they've long used you can now see this couple all over the place, such as on buses...

Midtown Spring 1

...on billboards...

MIdtown Spring 3

...and even on the floor of Midtown Plaza itself.  Of course you can also see them on the Midtown Plaza website.

Incidentally the billboard above has appeared before on this blog, while you can see an image from a previous Midtown Plaza ad campaign here.

The Flip Side.

star sign2

star sign4

As a followup to my previous post featuring art on the Drinkle No. 3 building here is the opposite side of the structure.  It features an ad for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix that is hard to miss.

A similar ad is found on an apartment building on 2nd Avenue, seen here from the 23rd Street bus mall.

Protection.

Enticement

I spotted this sign today in a local McDonalds. Whatever its intent I'm sure the night shift workers are glad for anything that makes cops visit more often, as such visits will deter robberies.

I'm hoping to post here on a more regular schedule during 2010, but don't hold me to it. I've been wrong before.

Oops.

bad sign

This sign currently visible on the billboard at 22nd Street and 3rd Avenue has a grammar error. An apostrophe followed by an s indicates possession, not plurality. Plurality is indicated by just adding s. Taxis is the correct plural of taxi, while taxi's means something that belongs to a taxi, such as in the sentence "The taxi's front window was cracked." If I were paying a bunch of money for a sign I would want whoever designed it to know their grammar.

A Winning Hand.

aces2

aces1

As someone who plays poker online I quite like this sign for Anderson's Transmission with its quad Aces theme. After all there are few better hands in many types of poker than quad Aces. Yellow on the other hand isn't a colour I associate with poker.

Bright Red.

new shell

No, the price of gas hasn't taken a huge leap in Saskatoon. This sign, located at the corner of Broadway Avenue and 8th Street, was turned on this week in advance of a new gas station opening. The several decades old Shell station located on this corner was knocked down earlier this year to be replaced by a completely brand new Shell.

Back In Action.

Following up on a previous post here's the front of Esteem For The Home, which is now open again. As you can see they've once again responded humourously.

Humour In Adversity.

esteem2

On the afternoon of October 10th a vehicle crashed through the front window of Esteen For the Home, located in the College Park Mall.

esteem1

Although the accident forced them to close up shop until further notice they did manage to find a humourous way to address their misfortune.

A Reminder.

league

When I see this sign on 8th Street it tends to remind me of the Human League. Phillip Adrian Wright was a member when the band had its commercial breakthrough with the single "Don't You Want Me?", as was vocalist Joanne Catherall, who remains a member to this day.

Whoa, Doggy.

I find this sign found in a local park amusing. Given the relative sizes of the man and the dog that's one big mutt. I'd hate to have to clean up after him. But then again I'd hate to have to clean up after any dog.
